Act As If: The Neuroscience of Becoming Who You Want to Be

A recording from Bret Shuford's live video

What if the gap between where you are and where you want to be isn't about talent, money, or timing—but belief? What if the transformation you crave begins not with getting ready, but with acting as if you're already there?

This isn't woo-woo. It's neuroscience.

As a creative entrepreneur, content creator, and former Broadway actor, I've seen firsthand how identity shapes reality. And lately, in my coaching and on platforms like Substack, I've been returning to one powerful mindset shift again and again: act as if.

Act as if you're already booked. Act as if you're already paid. Act as if you're already successful.

This isn't about faking it. It's about training your brain to align with the future you're building.

Your Brain Believes What You Rehearse

Our brains are wired for pattern recognition. The more we think a thought, the more we act on a belief, the stronger the neural pathway becomes. This is called neuroplasticity—your brain's ability to adapt and rewire itself based on repeated behavior and emotion.

When you consistently show up as the version of yourself you want to become, you reinforce the neural identity of that person. It stops being a dream and starts becoming your norm.

This is why actors rehearse. Why athletes visualize. Why high performers have rituals.

So what does that look like for you, the creative building your brand, launching your offer, or pitching partnerships?

Becoming Begins Before Arrival

I remember starting the @BroadwayHusbands content account with my husband, feeling like a fraud. We weren’t influencers. We weren’t salespeople. We had barely 10,000 followers. I thought: “Why would anyone pay us to post?”

And yet—we showed up. We posted consistently. We spoke our values. We reached out to brands. We treated our content like a job before it paid us like one.

That mental shift—from waiting to be ready to acting ready—landed us our first five-figure brand partnership. Not because we tricked anyone. But because we trained our brains to operate from where we wanted to go, not where we started.

The Science Behind "Act As If"

Neuroscientists have shown that the brain can’t always distinguish between a vividly imagined experience and a real one. This is why visualization is so powerful in rewiring limiting beliefs.

When you act as if, you're:

  • Engaging the reticular activating system (RAS) to filter information in alignment with your goals.

  • Creating new neural maps that support behavior change.

  • Reducing fear and hesitation by normalizing the experience you desire.

In simpler terms: you become what you repeatedly believe and behave.

Real-World Practices to Shift into Identity

If you're ready to stop waiting to be "ready" and start embodying the version of yourself who already has what you desire, here are some practical mindset shifts:

1. Dress the Part (Literally or Figuratively)
Show up to your workspace, Zoom call, or Instagram Story dressed like someone who takes their craft seriously. Energy matters.

2. Speak the Language
Start saying: "I'm a full-time content creator." "I'm building a six-figure brand." Even if you're on step one. Your words shape your identity.

3. Take Brave Action Daily
Pitch yourself. Post the video. Go to the networking event. Don’t wait to feel confident—build confidence through momentum.

4. Surround Yourself With Evidence
Join communities where people are doing what you want to do. Seeing others live your vision helps your brain register it as achievable.

5. Journal From the Future
Write from the version of you who has already "made it." What did they do differently? What are they grateful for? What are their routines?

Let Go of Perfect. Get Present.

One of the biggest myths in creative industries is that perfection equals professionalism. I’m here to tell you—that mindset will keep you stuck.

Some of our biggest wins came from imperfect, slightly awkward posts or cold DMs that made us cringe a little. But we sent them. We showed up.

We weren’t trying to impress. We were trying to connect.

And the more we allowed ourselves to show up from a place of purpose, the more aligned opportunities came our way.

Final Thought: What Would You Do If You Believed?

So let me ask you: What would you do today if you already had the following, the bookings, the opportunities you dream of?

Would you move differently? Speak more boldly? Share your work more often?

You don’t have to wait to arrive.

The future version of you is watching. And cheering you on.

So start acting as if.

Not because you need to fake anything.
But because you’re already becoming.
